Utah Broadband Receives $23M USDA Funding for Fiber Expansion

Utah Broadband is proud to announce that we have been awarded nearly $23 million in funding through Round 5 of the USDA Rural Utilities Service (RUS) ReConnect Loan and Grant Program. This major investment will support the expansion of high-speed fiber internet service across underserved rural communities throughout Cache, Summit, Utah, and Wasatch Counties.

The funding package includes a 50 percent grant and 50 percent loan structure, with approximately $11.5 million allocated to each portion of the project. Through this initiative, Utah Broadband will deploy more than 315 miles of new fiber-optic infrastructure, bringing reliable, symmetrical multi-Gig internet speeds to over 3,000 homes, businesses, farms, and community institutions across Northern Utah.

This expansion also marks Utah Broadband’s official entry into Cache County, further strengthening our commitment to connecting rural communities with world-class broadband infrastructure.

Building Opportunities Through Fiber Internet

Access to fast, reliable internet is no longer a luxury — it is essential for education, healthcare, agriculture, economic development, and everyday life. This project represents an important step toward closing the digital divide and ensuring rural Utah communities have access to the same opportunities as more densely populated urban areas.

“This award represents more than just infrastructure; it’s about creating opportunities for communities that have historically been underserved,” said Ben Elkins, CEO of Utah Broadband. “By bringing multi-Gig fiber internet to rural Northern Utah, we are helping students, families, businesses, and local communities stay connected and competitive in today’s digital world.”

Supporting Rural Utah Communities

The USDA ReConnect Program was launched in 2018 to expand broadband access in rural America and strengthen the digital infrastructure needed to support modern communities. Since its inception, the program has invested billions of dollars into broadband projects nationwide focused on improving connectivity for education, healthcare, agriculture, public safety, and economic growth.

Utah Broadband’s Vice President of Fiber and Wireless Development, Mike Simmons, emphasized the importance of delivering infrastructure designed specifically for rural Utah’s unique needs.

“Rural communities deserve reliable internet solutions built with long-term growth in mind,” Simmons said. “This project reflects Utah Broadband’s continued dedication to delivering high-quality service, investing in local communities, and building infrastructure that will serve residents for generations to come.”

Continuing Utah Broadband’s Growth

This project represents another significant milestone in Utah Broadband’s continued growth and long-term mission to ensure no community is left behind when it comes to reliable internet access.

As construction progresses, Utah Broadband looks forward to partnering with local communities and leaders to bring expanded fiber connectivity to more residents and businesses across Northern Utah.
